CHERRY STREET LEVEL CROSSING SAFETY UPGRADE COMPLETE

The $260,000 upgrade of Cherry Street level crossing in Werribee is now complete, making it safer for motorists, train passengers and the local community.

Member for Werribee, Tim Pallas, said the upgrade would make the dangerous crossing safer ahead of its removal by the Andrews Labor Government.

The upgrade included the reconfiguration the Market Road pedestrian crossing, and new lanes on the northern side of the level crossing.

Traffic signals were also improved to reduce queuing and congestion in and around the level crossing.

The level crossing and road safety works were undertaken in order to improve road traffic flow and reduce queuing across the Cherry Street level crossing.

This level crossing was the site of the 2012 fatal accident after a freight train hit a stationary car and killed an elderly woman.

It is on the list of 50 dangerous and congested level crossings that the Labor Government will remove over the next seven years, to increase traffic flow, improve safety and create space to run more trains.
