MINISTERS STATEMENTS: EMPLOYMENT
Mr PALLAS (Werribee—Treasurer, Minister for Economic Development, Minister for Industrial Relations) (11:15:50): I am back by popular demand to talk about the outstanding things that are happening in terms of job creation due to the Andrews Labor government’s efforts. Since 2014 the infrastructure investment by this government has supported the creation of 115 000 jobs. In fact almost one in 10 Victorians in employment is now employed in the construction industry due to this government’s investment. Contrast this to the wasted years under those opposite when the unemployment rate rose to 6.7 per cent and they created less than one-sixth of the jobs created under this government. The Leader of the Opposition was a poison pill for the Victorian economy, what with his letter on the side and his dragging down of the economy as he took an axe to the services that Victorians relied upon. He doubled debt, and he had nothing to show for it except for his dodgy side letter and, of course, a deficit budget in 2012–13. Those opposite, if they cared about increasing the shared prosperity of Victorians, might wonder why the construction industry is creating more jobs than any other industry in Victoria. I can tell them why. It is because of this government’s record infrastructure investment. We will be spending an average of $13.4 billion a year over the budget and forward estimates to build schools, hospitals, roads and public transport infrastructure. This is nearly triple the $4.9 billion a year from 2005–06 to 2014–15. That is what a good government does. It uses the resources at its disposal to create jobs and deliver services right across our state. That is why we have a AAA credit rating and that is why we are putting that rating to work. We have created over 450 000 jobs since we were elected in November 2014, and that is why Victorians trust us to get on and deliver for them.
