TIM PALLAS MP WELCOMES RELEASE OF THE VET FUNDING REVIEW
Member for Werribee Tim Pallas MP has today welcomed the release of the final report of the independent VET Funding Review and the Andrews Labor Government response.
Tim Pallas MP said the Labor Government promised to respond to the release before the end of year and we have kept our word.
In responding to the Review Tim Pallas MP said the Labor Government will prioritise funding for training that leads to jobs.
The changes are part of a major overhaul to the way Victoria’s $1.2 billion vocational education and training (VET) sector is funded.
They will guarantee the survival of TAFE, meet skill shortages and ensure the long term-term prosperity of the state’s economy.
The Review recommends the Government develop a more managed, targeted and contestable system that better links training to industry and job outcomes, guarantees additional funds for TAFEs, and ensures only quality training providers receive government funding.
The Government Response outlines 6 themes that will guide future reforms:
- A clear vision for VET in Victoria, targeted to meeting industry need and providing job outcomes
- A responsive and sustainable model that promotes lifelong learning
- Defining clear roles for TAFEs and community sectors to ensure strong and sustainable systems
- Transparency for students, industry and employers
- Supporting quality and continuous improvement
- Promotion of equity for learners of all abilities
Regional communities will also benefit from a new model which will make sure locals get the skills they need.
We will now engage with key stakeholders so a new detailed funding model can be implemented progressively from 2017.
The Labor Government has already started to rebuild TAFEs through our $320 million TAFE Rescue Fund which is investing in new facilities, opening closed campuses and supporting TAFEs to better meet their community obligations.
