NEW CRIME STATS PROMISING BUT MORE WORK TO BE DONE
The Andrews Labor Government’s record investment in officers, resources and technology was helping Victoria Police crackdown on crime in Wyndham.
State members that cover the Wyndham LGA Telmo Languiller, Tim Pallas and Jill Hennessy say the latest crime statistics show police are making more arrests and coming down hard on recidivist offenders across Wyndham.
The statistics released today show a decrease of 3.3% or a reduction of 508 in the total number of offences committed in the Wyndham area in the year ending March 2017.
The offence rate is 6,455.1 per 100,000 people in the year ending March 2017, which is a 6.3% per cent decrease.
Importantly, incidents of family violence – our number one law and order issue – are stabilizing, increasing by just 0.3 per cent per 100,000 population across Victoria, and decreased by 2.4% or 72 offences.
Property and deception offences accounted for around 60 per cent of overall offences in Wyndham, with a 5.7% per cent decrease in this category.
The statistics show how hard Victoria Police is working in the Wyndham area to detect, investigate and disrupt crime, and how important the Labor Government’s investment in turning around the six-year crime trend is.
The 2017-18 Victorian Budget delivered an unprecedented $1.91 billion to implement every recommendation from the Royal Commission into Family Violence and reform the system to hold perpetrators to account and support victims.
The Andrews Labor Government is delivering its $2 billion Community Safety Statement which is giving police the resources, facilities, technology, powers and laws they need to reduce harm and keep our community safe.
The Andrews Labor Government has also provided $302,414 of community safety funding to the Wyndham region to tackle the causes of crime. On top of this a $700,000 targeted youth crime prevention grant has been allocated to Wyndham.
The first 300 of 3135 new police have already been allocated to growth areas across Victoria, including 27 new police allocated to the Wyndham Police Service Area, while the Police Academy continues to run at capacity.
The government has strengthened powers for police, added five new teams to target gangs and illicit firearms, toughened sentences for drug dealers, created new carjacking and home invasion offences, and is banning cash for scrap.
