City of Wyndham roads – Delivered in Parliament 26 Nov 2013
Mr PALLAS (Tarneit) — I rise to address the matter of the rapidly deteriorating and increasingly inadequate state of arterial roads in Wyndham. I have raised this issue again and again, yet the government continues to snub this community.
Many of the roads are essential links through Wyndham and connect to Princes Freeway. Action must be taken to reduce the strain of traffic congestion for the families of Werribee. More than nine roads are at or have exceeded capacity, and specific examples of these include Dohertys Road, Leakes Road, Heaths Road and Sayers Road. Many other Wyndham roads are overcrowded and need to be duplicated. There are safety concerns, frustrations and inconveniences related to congestion.
The coalition government has ignored the basic needs of this growing community, and the investment in Wyndham made by the previous government, which totalled nearly $190 million in Labor’s last term alone, has shrunk.
Labor has committed to invest more in our outer metropolitan areas. If elected to government, it would spend $1 billion on our metropolitan and growth areas. In Werribee, we would see to the removal of two dangerous level crossings — those at Werribee and Cherry streets. Both of these crossings are in the top 13 of the Australian level crossing assessment model priority list, but up until now they have been ignored by this government. At least somebody has a plan to deal with the problems of growth in our outer suburban areas.
